Meet Bailey Weggins, the thirty-something, true crime journalist for Buzz, a leading Manhattan woman's celebrity magazine. Smart and sweet, she's got a sixth sense when it comes to seeing the truth in a story - especially if it's murder.
Bailey is in a rut. In addition to her gig at Buzz, she's churning out freelance articles, and has been trying to move sales on her first book, a collection of her crime pieces called Bad Men and Wicked Women. With her on-again-off-again, recently exclusive boyfriend, Beau Regan, out of town, Bailey decides to take her work friend Jessie up on her offer to visit a big country estate. What's the harm? At least the famous model, Devon Barr, will be among the guests in attendance.
But, the weekend getaway soon turns into something resembling a hostage situation. There is weird tension between all the guests - a glamorous crowd of models and journalists - coyotes howling in the woods, and snow piling outside. When Devon's lifeless body is found in her bed early morning, Bailey is the first to suspect foul play. She just can't shake the memory of Devon shivering in the woods outside the house the day before, insisting with equal parts anger and fear, "I have to get out here. It's not safe for me."
When evidence goes missing from the crime scene, Bailey once again finds herself a moving target - running closer to the truth and farther from safety.
