Sound Art is a work that features a sound as a component. The sound produced by the work can be noise or a more harmonious collection of sounds (ie, music). Frequently, these works have an interactive component, so that the viewer, by moving around or engaging with the piece in some way, actually causes the sound component to be activated. Sound art is often installation based, but it can also be a single piece of sculpture. In the strictest sense, sound artists and their work are interested in sound as a phenomenon of nature or technology.
Sound Art, with over 200 images and a CD of 10 recordings of sound pieces, is more comprehensive than any book on the market on the subject. The author takes the reader through the extraordinary evolution of sound art, from its beginnings in the early 20th century with the avant-garde circles of Italian Futurism, Dada and Surrealism, to its maturation in the 60s through today.
