Bark Paintings from Arnhem Land
Bark painting has been developed by generations of Aboriginal artists from Arnhem Land and other parts of northern Australia into an art form of singular spirituality and power. The medium owes its origins to sketches on bark wet-weather shelters, rock art, designs on hollow-log coffins and body art whose design elements encode complex meanings which have developed over a period of 60,000 years of Aboriginal occupation before white colonisation.
This book some well-known works by renowned (and not-yet-well-known) Aboriginal artists, the history of Aboriginal art, the geography of each style, and its evolution to the present-day sale of art for survival.
