In this coming of age story, fifteen year old Jess uncovers a family secret, takes on new responsibilities and learns much about herself in the process.
Jess mother has an operation for breast cancer. Jess and her twin sister, Andy, are sent to stay with their father in Sydney – but there is only one seat available on the aircraft. One of the twins must stay with Gran, who is estranged from the family. Jess wants to find out why this is. Gran needs a lot of looking after and seems puzzled by Jess appearance. And who is this Sylvia that Gran talks to when she is alone?
Jess discovers that her mother also had a twin sister – Sylvia. Gran tells her how Sylvia was drowned while swimming at the beach where Jess now swims. Because of the accident, Jess mother left home. Gran says that since Jess arrived she feels Sylvia is near to her. She needs Jess and wants her to stay. Will Jess stay? Will she be afraid to swim? Where is Sylvia's spirit now?
