Throughout 2002, Hugh Evans spent a year living and working in the rural valley region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He worked jointly as a Youth Ambassador for World Vision Australia and on community projects at an HIV/AIDS orphanage called God's Golden Acre.

When he returned home he established the Oak Tree Foundation, a Melbourne-based youth-run aid organisation that has 250 volunteers. Hugh kept a diary of his experiences living with the Zulu people, which forms the basis of this book. The book weaves together the threads of Hugh's experiences - visiting the slums of Manila, living in India, stories of the people living in the Zulu community, and key issues such as health, violence and poverty in developing communities. It will both inspire and inform.
