Flora Fielding is at rock bottom. She has just turned thirty, has the relocation clients from hell on her back and, when her live-in boyfriend dumps her during a holiday to San Francisco leaving her without a home to return to, she decides to track down her cousin Bella, who emigrated there a couple of years previously, in the hope of some home-grown tea and sympathy. As a nurse in a San Francisco hospital, Bella is a shining example of successful womanhood. But when she arrives at Bella's apartment, Flora is shocked to find the reality is rather different. Instead of gliding around a hospital, Bella is eking out a living as the lead singer in an Abba tribute band. It's not exactly ER, is it? To try to reclaim their lives, Flora, Bella and Bella's GBF Toby, agree to do one thing that frightens them. For Bella this involves trying to make a career out of her music (as well as facing up to some serious issues at the hospital where she works); for Toby it is overcoming his fear of relationships; and for Flora it's a question of learning that one's true home does not necessarily involve bricks and mortar - a journey that throws her into the path of quirky social-network designer Josh, a man who not only has her reassessing her feelings for her ex, but makes her realise there is a whole lot of life out there she has been missing out on. Things seem to be on the up - until Bella is rushed into hospital with an ectopic pregnancy and an unwanted visitor turns up just as Flora and Josh are about to share an intimate moment... And just like that they're right back where they started.
