Why did you rob banks, Mr Sutton?

Between 1925 and 1950, Willie Sutton robbed 100 banks and also broke out of three escape-proof prisons - all without firing a single shot. He was driven by two things - a lost love and the belief that bankers were the root cause of everything wrong with society. Among the most notorious criminals in American history, he spent half his life in prison, the other half on the run. Then, on 24th December 1969, at the age of 68, he found himself a free man. Despite a universal demand for interviews, he granted only one, spending all that Christmas with a newspaper reporter and a photographer. They drove around New York City, visiting the scenes of his many heists, betrayals, heartbreaks and escapes. The result was an odd front-page article, filled with half-truths and platitudes. Notably missing was any mention of Sutton's first accomplice, the girl who lead him into a life of crime, then broke his heart.
