Late at night in an empty Ohio shopping mall, a teenage girl is discovered by a security guard. Speechless and traumatised, she has also been tattooed all over her body with tiny black fish scales. The authorities name the girl Emma and allow Lucy Thurman to adopt her.
An ex-fat lady in the circus side-show, Lucy has spent most of her adult life feeling a "freak". But, as she works to understand exactly what has happened to her new daughter, she is forced to face her own demons and return to the seedy side-shows it once took all her power to escape from. And there are also dangers closer to hand, for it seems that whoever - or whatever - it is that Emma has escaped from, wants her back . . .
