Private Investigator Tess Monaghan has good reason to be pleased with life. She's back in Baltimore where she likes to be, she's beginning to make a name for herself as a PI, and she's even banking good money. She can relax - almost.

Then her father asks for a favour: to investigate the prison death of a friend's brother, jailed for the killing of an unidentified girl known only as Jane Doe. Unwillingly, Tess looks into it. A trail emerges that leads her to the Sugar House, a brutal institution where Tess uncovers the real identity of Jane Doe. And now, suddenly, Tess's father is begging her to drop the case . . .
