Angoras are believed to be descended from the wild goats of Asia Minor, and they have been raised since biblical times for their marvellous fleece. This fleece, called mohair, has long been coveted for its luxurious softness and lustres.
Angoras were first introduced into Australia in the 1830s, but in the last few years the Australian mohair industry has been lifted to new standards by the phenomenal effects of South African and Texan imports. The results of this genetic input on fleece weight and type has enabled Australian fibre to compete freely on the international mohair market.
This book deals with the breeding cycle, husbandry techniques and the value of types of feed, as well as such important considerations as how to buy your initial herd, upgrading the quality of that herd, what to look for when buying a property and the shows and sales where the success in breeding is measured.
Diagrams throughout complement the text, and the book is illustrated with both colour and black and white photographs.
