Second in 'The Black Magician' trilogy.
In Book Two of this trilogy, Sonea knows Akkarin is a black magician . . . nowhere is safe for her now. Administrator Lorlen was horrified to learn from Sonea that the High Lord Akkarin performed black magic and asked Sonea to keep her discovery a secret. Akkarin claims guardianship of Sonea, basically holding her hostage.
Accepted into the Magicians' Guild she finds that novices from rich families will not accept a girl from the slums, but she learns quickly and well. One particular boy, Regin, begins to taunt her, making her life a misery and Sonea's friends, Rothen and Dannyl, are not always around to help.
One day, going through the forbidden passages, Sonea follows Akkarin to the a house in the slums where he interrogates a man. Discovered by Akkarin, he tells her the man is a spy, sent by Sachakan magicians, but she is sceptical and does not believe him.
Blocked at every turn, Sonea works hard at becoming one of the best magicians in the Guild as this is the only way she will gain some measure of freedom.
