Set in an alternate world of a Britain where London is only a small outlying village, this rirproaring fantasy begins with the murder of a gentleman and as young Crispin is whisked off on a search for the famed black sphinx, the pace rarely lets up as he joins forces with a stage magician and his assistant (who happens to be a werewolf).
