The novel is a Gothic story of an Edwardian woman, Violet, who marries a book collector. She becomes obsessed by a book of fairy tales that her husband acquires; she develops delusions about harming her baby and is put in an asylum by her husband. After some time, she leaves the asylum and corpses of women are discovered in the surroundings of the village. Their skin has been removed and they are mutilated in ways that are suggestive of certain fairy tales. The husband employs a nanny; Violet suspects they have embarked on an affair. Violet starts seeing dead bodies and becomes convinced her husband is the murderer. He finally puts her back in the asylum, where she is given ECT. On Violet's eventual release her obsessions take her in search of the truth and lead her to a terrifying discovery.
