A superbly written story of love and intrigue set in the volatile world of international investigative journalism.
At the heart of 'The Canal House' is the love affair between Julia, a refugee camp doctor, and renegade war-zone journo, Daniel. Their story takes them across the globe, from Africa to Asia to Europe, and beyond.
After a serious injury, Daniel is determined to leave behind his reckless gonzo past, and finds solace in the beautiful, principled Julia. But Julia is involved with a possessive banking tycoon named Richard, who, in order to win her over, has poured money into humanitarian work, setting up a non-profit aid organisation and making her the boss.
But nothing can stand in the way of love, and Julia and Daniel escape Richard and his moneyed hold, finding sanctuary in a London house above a canal. Although Richard doesn't follow them, he seeks revenge and, years later, when all three converge amid the conflict in East Timor, he is implicated in the book's tragic climax.
