Having retired from the SAS after participating in such operations as the Falklands War, the First Gulf War and Bosnia, Bob Shepherd was certain that his dangerous adventures in far-flung places were over. When he joined The Circuit, he found himself lying on Caribbean beaches as he provided protection to an American billionaire, and heading up a security detail for a Swiss family living in the South of France.
When the Twin Towers fell in September 2001, however, everything changed in an instant, and it wasn't long before Bob found himself navigating through landmines in the deserts of Afghanistan to get a news team their latest story, rifling through make-shift morgues in search of the missing members of Terry Lloyd's ITN crew or with his head sandwiched between a tank and the barrel of an M16. But as the demand for security advisers rocketed overnight, people with no military training found themselves in the Middle East with machine guns in their hands. It was all quickly becoming a recipe for disaster.
