Billy O'Conner is tall, skinny and unpopular. He desperately wants to be good at something. If there were only something he could do, like draw, paint or play a musical instrument. It's not as if he doesn't have the means. His mother buys him expensive presents all the time, hoping her purchases will help him unearth some hidden talent.
Then something weird happens. Almost overnight, Bumbling Billy becomes Brilliant Billy, the idol of Figtree Primary. He plays the piano, draws, paints, spouts poetry, catches balls - he simply oozes confidence and "cool".
These spookily acquired talents don't entirely bring Billy happiness - he discovers that popularity comes at a price. He also discovers that some things are more important than brilliance and fame.
