The safest suburbs often hold the deepest secrets. Such is the case for Essie, a mother of two. In a moment of maternal despair she once made a terrible mistake, one she will always regret. Essie has since recovered, but she fears what may still lurk inside her.
Her neighbours in Pleasant Court have their own issues. Driven and energetic, Ange appears to have everything under control, except perhaps her husband. The ever-practical, intellectual Fran can't stop running. For exercise, or something else?
One hot February day during an unprecedented Melbourne heatwave, a new neighbour arrives. Isabelle is single and childless, when everyone else is married, with kids. She is renting, when everyone else owns. Isabelle's job is mysterious and vague. Strangest of all, Isabelle is very interested in her new neighbours. Too interested, some might say.
It soon starts to become clear that Isabelle's choice of neighbourhood was no accident. And that her presence might bring even more secrets to light.

This is Sally Hepworth's fourth novel and it continues with the style and approach of her earlier works. Focussing on the residents of the Pleasant Court enclave, the story crosses family lines and minds as it explores the idea of just what may be going on behind the public faces.
Hepworth wrote and then edited this novel while somewhat housebound through pregnancy then nursing a young child. The experience left her wondering what the neighbours might be up to or even better, what unspoken things could lay behind an outward persona.
Some readers have compared The Family Next Door favourably to television’s Desperate Housewives but without quite the same degree of tele-drama.

The Family Next Door
Hidden behind the perfect houses of Pleasant Court, the lives of four women are slowly falling apart. Control freak Ange is furiously trying to keep her life from spinning out around her, whilst Fran can't stop running – but is she running from something, or to something?
Essie has made mistakes and can't stop obsessing that she'll make the same mistake again. Personally, I loved Essie's storyline – relatable yet seriously flawed, Essie makes the reader question what they would do if they were pushed to breaking point. Then comes the mysterious Isabelle with a suitcase full of emotional baggage and a secret that she's trying desperately to hide.
I absloutely adored this book, and thought it was perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty and Holly Wainwright. 10/10 must read!

The Family Next Door, the new novel by bestselling author Sally Hepworth, shows that everything is not as it seems. From afar the Melbourne suburb, Pleasant Court takes after it's name, however, as you seep in further it is riddled with secrecy, crime and deception. In this community composed of supposedly the most well-mannered and hopeful citizens it takes one outsider to unravel it all. - Rebekah (QBD)

Sally Hepworth's latest novel is full of twists & intrigue, leaving us to question how well we really know those close to us. Essie, Fran and Ange have a lot in common. They live on the same street, they all have children. And they all have something to hide. When Isabelle, single and childless, moves to the block, thirty years worth of secrets come to play. Fans of Liane Moriarty will devour this - Rosie (QBD)

Secrets and lies, deception and delusion and love drive this twisted tale and Sally will have you gripped till the final page. This is the first Sally Hepworth book I have read; it won't be the last! Told from the viewpoints of multiple women, Sally masterfully weaves together a story that you can't put down. Follow as the cover of their perfect lives are stripped away, one by one. Definitely recommend for fans of Liane Moriarty. - Alexandra (QBD)

This book felt like the plot was lacking any depth. There were a lot of paths that didn't go anywhere. I was left uninspired and with a feeling of incompleteness.
At the beginning of this book, Essie leaves her baby in a park and goes home, then it jumps 3 years into the future and follows the stories of five different women, leaving this story a little to the wayside. There was so much potential, but this “Baby-Leaving” never seemed to tie in with the rest of the story. Essie is now with another baby and suffering from post-partum depression. This really seemed like enough to explain the situation rather than a history of an incident 3 years ago.
Does anyone know what happened to the “Neighbourhood Watch”?
Another story development that went nowhere. - Nathan (QBD)

Pleasant Court may appear completely pleasant from the outside, but it is not quite so pleasant if you scratch the surface even a little. All the houses may look the same, the residents may all wear the same pleasant smile, but behind these unassuming facades are unimaginable stories. These complicated individuals have more heartache and tribulation then anyone could expect. - Sam-Maree (QBD)

This novel delves into the minds of several families following five complicated women. In Pleasant Court, a community where everyone really is “Pleasant” and you are friends with all your neighbours, I can only say nothing is as it seems, no one is as they seem and there are so many interesting paths to follow. I did not see the big change coming, I love when that happens. - Sam-Maree (QBD)

In this well written humorous drama, suburban wives are faced with unique and comical situations. The Family Next Door is particularly refreshing read and becomes easily time consuming. Sally Hepworth once again delivers a mesmerising tale following her success of The Mother's Promise and The Secrets of Midwives. - Laura (QBD)

There's always a secret behind closed doors, no matter how close to the people who live next to you are. What will you do to protect the peace and quiet of your neighbourhood?
Personally, I believe this books is better than most of Liane Moriarty's books. Read it and prove me wrong, but I think that's unlikely. - Karina (QBD)

This book took me in at the first event Essie leaving her newborn at the park, I could not believe it and had to find out what happens. The story jumps into the future and suddenly I am captivated by four other characters: Barbara, Ange, Fran and Isabelle all have their very unique issues that they keep hidden. This novel delves into the minds of several families following five complicated women. In Pleasant Court, a community where everyone really is “Pleasant” and you are friends with all your neighbours, I can only say nothing is as it seems, no one is as they seem and there are so many interesting paths to follow.
