The eighty-five essays collected here were written in haste between October 1787 and May 1788 in the heat of political controversy. Written in support of the American constitution and signed "Publius", the authors were in fact Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, later Secretary of the Treasury, President of the United States and Chief Justice respectively.
