'Intensely human in its tragic details, positively Shakespearian in its epic sweep - probably the best cop novel ever written.' Lee Child.

Don Winslow, the acclaimed, award-winning, bestselling author of The Cartel and The Power of the Dog, delivers a cinematic epic as explosive, powerful and unforgettable as Mystic River and The Wire. 'The Force is mesmerizing, a triumph. Think The Godfather, only with cops. It's that good.' Stephen King

All Denny Malone wants is to be a good cop.He is a highly decorated NYPD detective sergeant and the leader of 'Da Force'. Malone and his crew are an elite special unit given carte blanche to fight gangs, drugs and guns. Every day and every night for eighteen years, Malone has served on the front lines, witnessing the hurt, the dead, the victims, the perps. He's done whatever it takes to serve and protect in a city built by ambition and corruption, where no one is clean-including Malone himself. What only a few know is that Denny Malone is dirty. Now he's caught in a trap and being squeezed by the Feds, and he must walk the thin line between betraying his brothers and partners, the Job, his family, and the woman he loves, trying to survive, body and soul, while the city teeters on the brink of a racial conflagration that could destroy them all.

Based on years of research inside the NYPD, The Force is the great cop novel of our time: a searing portrait of a city on the edge and of a courageous, heroic, and deeply flawed man who stands at the edge of its abyss.

Don Winslow's The Force is a fast paced and thoroughly engrossing cop thriller that had me questioning my moral and ethical boundaries. Denny Malone is a decorated NYPD cop, who rules the streets of New York but who finds himself on the otherside of the law. How and why? You'll have to read it to find out. - Julie (QBD)

The Force is a very realistic view of how one can start out so full of expectation in life and have everything they believe in drastically altered. Our morale becomes a twisted memory and our lifestyle becomes a mandatory set of behaviours that are almost persecuted if not adhered to. This is an interesting study of how our surroundings and circumstances shape who we are and what we can become. - Sam-Maree (QBD)

The Force by Don Winslow is a fantastic cop thriller that has everything you look for in a great read. Winslow doesn't pull any punches when it comes to corrupt cops, politicians or drug dealers which makes for a thrilling gast paced read. Lee Child has stated 'probably the best cop novel ever written' and I'm inclined to agree! - Mitchell (QBD)

If you've ever found yourself in a situation you can't get out of, and the hole you've dg yourself just keeps getting bigger and bigger, you've got something in common with Denny Malone. He's telling his story from a cell, but how did New York's finest end up in the lowest place on Earth? How did he fall so far? Brilliantly current and brutally honest in it's depiction of the seedy underbelly of New York, Winslow dives right into the Black Lives Matter world and pulls no punches in delivering a dark, gritty depiction of drug dealers, race issues and police brutality along with police corruption. Already optioned for cinematic release with Ridley Scott at the helm, this was an instant favourite for me. Akin to Lehane's Mystic River, if you love anything from Stephen King to Lee Child you will be held in a literary chokehold from front cover to back. - Samantha (QBD)

A gritty police novel centering around corruption, "The Force" follows Denny Malone and his team of detectives as they fight the war on guns and drugs. The elite force protects the streets of manhatten. In addition to not being a genre I usually read, The Force features heavy jargon, excessive coarse language and racism making it inaccessible to the general reade. Not for me. Don Winslow does an excellent job of presenting the kind of moral murkiness the modern american cop is faced with in their day to day operations, despite perhaps the best of intentions ... as well as telling a ripping yarn! Also, he seamlessly ties in contemporary political realities, such as the Black Lives Matters group. A must for any fan of police procedural or crime. - Jeremy (QBD)

The Force's primary strength is its colorful and engaging writing style. You're drawn inside Denny Malone's view of Manhattan North, which feels very reminiscent of the dark cities in 1930's pulp fiction. The protagonist's voice is far superior to the content in The Force and lifts an otherwise cliche' gangster/cop story to an enjoyable - yet not entirely statisfying - read! - Linda (QBD)

There's only one word to describe 'The Force' by Don Winslow, and that's amazing. If you're looking for a fast paced, action packed and unputdownable book then look no further. The force has everything that you want in a fiction, the three c's; crime, cops and corruption. If you're a fan of Michael Connelly then this book is definitely the one for you! - Tegan (QBD)

If you haven't yet devoured 'The Force' by Don Winslow then you are truly missing out, as Lee Child said "The best Cop Novel Ever" . Based on years of reseach inside the NYPD, Winslow has created Denny Malone 'King of Manhatten North' and leader of 'Da Force' a team given unrestriced authority to take down gangs, drugs and guns. What will happen when he falls into a trap and who would be betray? - Ayano (QBD)

It's been said before but The Force was a book that kept you hooked from the first page to the very last. Don Winslow delivers a fast paced, action packed crime novel that will keep you on your toes from the very beginning. I picked up this book with the expectation of it being your average crime novel, but was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns this book took. - Taylah (QBD)

On the mean streets of Manhattan North, The Force are an elite unit of the NYPD in pursuit of justice – the legal kind or, the effective kind. Detective Sargent Denny Malone walks the slippery slope between “getting things done” and outright corruption: a good cop gone bad, one step at a time, after a professional lifetime spent chasing the worst and getting nowhere fast. Winslow chronicles the impossible expectations that burden police, when violent, illegally enterprising criminals play by no rules. The Force blows apart true-to-life headlines to reveal the murky depths of the contemporary underworld. The racially charged tinderbox simmering behind the magnificent skyline of New York, fuelled by drugs and guns, is ready to erupt, and when corruption trickles down from the top and soaks both sides of the law, its hard to judge the people on the ground who deal with the fallout. Up high-rise stairwells, through unwelcoming doors, you are in Malone's shoes. You're in his gut as he trusts his instincts, you're in his mind as he follows a lead or covers his tracks, you look down the barrel of his gun, you look into the eyes of his children. You will love this story if you enjoyed Breaking Bad – imagine Walter White, as a jaded detective. This book is a brilliant, tragic masterpiece, like The Wire or The Departed, before it. The last 77, blood-thumping pages, are unlike anything I’ve ever read and, would contend amongst the best endings ever written. - Amy (QBD)

Denny Malone and his crew are an elite force in charge of fighting the gangs and drug trade working in the underbelly of their city. When Malone is arrested by the Feds, he must walk the line to protect what he cares about most; his crew, his family, and the job. While I normally avoid crime and police dramas, Don Winslow has created a well-written novel that explores the underbelly of the police force, and highlights how difficult it can be to make morally right decisions as a cop, while still following the law. This novel is perfect for fans of crime and thriller authors, such as Lee Child. The story and themes are not really for me, but the writing is superb none the less. - Zoe (QBD)

While it is not my preferred genre, I highly enjoyed reading The Force. I found the story of a corrupt cop both gripping, and morally challenging. This novel has something for everyone, and the twists of the storyline will keep you hooked the whole way through. It's a store of loyalty, corruption, and one man trying to survive, whilst keeping his moral compass intact, as much as he has left of it. - Coreena (QBD)

This action packed thriller will throw you into the life of one of New York's finest, who battles with his own corrupt police unit as the Fed's come breathing down his neck. This is all against the backdrop of New York's underworld of drug cartels and the city's infamous projects. The author "Don Winslow" is awesome in this graphic protrayal of drug busting gun fights will keep you on the edge. - Christopher (QBD)

A dark, sad and now story. The Force is not a story for the light hearted. It show's the underside of the law where gangs, drugs, dirty fighting and being on the take is the way of life. Rules are not made by the politicians but by The Force and you answer to them. They will protect the area, families and each other. But when it all falls apart will they protect or take each other down. - Karen (QBD)

The Force has garnered rave commendations from bestselling thriller writers such as Lee Child and Stephen king - and for good reason. NYPD Detective Sergeant Denny Malone coolly plays through each day with his Special Task Force "Da Force", scraping through each nook of Manhattan North and executing high-profile drug busts with his teammates. But what happens when the good cop turns bad? How could a successful, reputable officer have it in him to stoop to the disgraceful lows of a corrupt and dirty cop? If there's a crime novel that you choose to read in 2017, make it this one. - Holly (QBD)

The Force has been described by Lee Child as "probably the best cop novel ever written", and this isn't mere hype. The novel hooked me with the Raymond Chandler quote at the beginning and never let up. If you've ever seen Robert DeNiro in films like Goodfellas and Casino, then you're going to like this book. Dirty, Gritty , Hard describes "Da Force", NYPD elite unit headed by Denny Malone where "Manhattan North is his Kingdom and where his subjects love him and fear him." He justifies himself by being corrupt by thinking "why should the bad guys make all the money all the time." When the Feds catch him in a trap what and who will survive? This quote describes the essence of this novel - "We're all corrupt. Just in our own way." - Gina (QBD)
