Following the tragic death of their father, Clem Price and his sister Alice take over the running of Lancoorie sheep station in Western Australia. Despite his youth and inexperience, Clem is committed to seeing the farm prosper. It is little wonder, therefore, that he agrees to marry Thora, the beautiful, yet fragile daughter of Dr Carty, who offers Clem a handsome dowry. Although he is aware that this arrangement is brought about by the fact that Thora is carrying another man's child, Clem is enchanted by his delicate young bride.
For a while they appear to be happy, but Thora is flighty and demanding. She is disappointed that her husband is not as wealthy as she had imagined, so, desperate to please her, Clem joins the goldrush to Kalgoorlie. His prolonged absence eventually leads Thora to take a foolish trip to Perth, despite Alice's sisterly warnings that Clem would not approve. Her behaviour in Perth society causes a commotion, and her reunion with Clem is to have shocking consequences from which those involved might never recover.
