THE GOOD DAUGHTERS follows the story of two women-born on the same day, in the same hospital, in two totally different kinds of families -- as they make their way through the decades between the nineteen-fifties to the present, and their struggles to make sense of the families in which neither of them ever truly felt she belonged. Told in the voices of these two characters -- Ruth, an artist and a romantic, with a rich and passionate imaginative life, and Linda, a scientist and realist whose faith lies in the physical world-the story explores the unlikely ways the two women's lives intersect, through childhood and adolescence, first love, first sex, marriage, parenthood, the deaths of parents, divorce, the loss of home, loss of a beloved partner-to an unavoidable moment when a long-held secret from the past alters everything.
Set against the backdrop of the New Hampshire farm where Ruth was raised-but following its characters to settings from an off-the-grid cabin in British Columbia to a Boston art school in the seventies, from an orphanage in China to a road trip in an RV fulfill the dream of a dying woman to her lover -- THE GOOD DAUGHTERS is a story about the ties of home and family, the devastating force of failed love, and the healing power of forgiveness.
