On his 40th birthday, Tom Good is no longer able to take his job seriously and gives up work to adopt a sustainable, simple and self-sufficient lifestyle while staying at home in Surbiton.
Tom and his wife Barbara turn their front and back gardens into allotments, growing fruit and vegetables and introducing chickens, pigs and a goat. They generate their own electricity using methane from animal waste and attempt to make their own clothes. Their actions horrify their kindly but conventional neighbours, Margo and Jerry Leadbetter.
However, under the influence of the Good’s homemade wine (‘peapod burgundy’) and through many and various hilarious trials and tribulations, their attraction for each other becomes apparent and an unorthodox but very real friendship develops.
Much-loved episodes from the series include The Wind-Break War (when they all get tipsy together), Silly But It’s Fun (when they celebrate Christmas together), Backs To The Wall (when the Good’s crops are ruined by a storm, and Margo falls over in the mud) and Mutiny (when Margo stars in The Sound of Music).
