This is a stunning collection of 20 short stories where Kelman creates a certain kind of male consciousness and gets inside the skin of a certain kind of masculinity. There are men in pubs, men in vans, men in dole queues, men on building sites, men playing football, men wanting a fight, men "yapping" with other men, and men utterly mystified by women. All of them, in some way or other, are struggling to survive in the face of uncertainty, poverty, boredom, and failure. They strive to keep awareness of these horrors at bay, while trying also, on the peripheries of consciousness, to grapple with them and overcome them.
