The Gurkhas have fought on behalf of Britain for nearly two hundred years. Tough and resilient, they have earned a reputation as formidable fighters and their unswerving loyalty to the Crown has always inspired affection in the British people.
This affection was most evident on 21 May 2009 when the then Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, conceded a massive defeat for the British Government. Men born in Nepal who had served in the British Army s Brigade of Gurkhas for more than four years, and their dependents, would finally be allowed to settle in the United Kingdom. It was the end of a hard-fought campaign that had lasted nearly 200 years, led by Joanna Lumley, whose father had served in the Gurkhas.
