James Farley is not best suited to marriage; his wife, Claire, accepts only with difficulty that she is tied to this man who relishes the chase.
Whilst James runs his business in London, Claire spends most of her time in the family home in the green and remote Herefordshire countryside. She is vulnerable to the need to be needed, and finds an unexpected outlet when she offers to keep a hawk for a neighbour's son. It is a beautiful bird with the potential to be a powerful hunter, and gradually she is drawn into its training.
The experience is bewitching, but has unforeseen consequences when Claire's personal fate, as well as that of those around her, becomes linked with the bird. Predator is about to become prey.
