Enter a vanished world: Jackson, Mississippi, 1962. Where black maids raise white children, but aren't trusted not to steal the silver . . .

There's Aibileen, raising her seventeenth white child and nursing the hurt caused by her own son's tragic death; Minny, whose cooking is nearly as sassy as her tongue; and white Miss Skeeter, home from College, who wants to know why her beloved maid has disappeared.

Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny. No one would believe they'd be friends; fewer still would tolerate it. But as each woman finds the courage to cross boundaries, they come to depend and rely upon one another. Each is in a search of a truth. And together they have an extraordinary story to tell . . .

The Help transports the reader back to The South during troubled times- Mississippi in the early 1960's, where three unlikely suspects band together to help raise awareness about the racism that is occurring aroudn them everyday. Skeeter is a young, white writer who entices two of her friend's maids to pass on to her the interesting stories they have gathered over the years about the families they work for. Aibileen and Minny, while hesitant at times, bring their good humour, honesty and heartbreak to Skeeter and allow her to write their stories to voice the injustices they witness everyday. But how will the small community of Jackson feel when they start to read a book that has seemingly familiar stories within it?! This novel is filled with controversy and a warmth that will have you riding a roller coaster of emotions along with the characters you are bound to love. - Erin (QBD)

The Help
Kathryn Stockett manages to seamlessly weave the lives of three entirely different women, all suffering through small town life in 1962. As the three women band together to break the rules and shatter the fragile nature of their communities racially prejudiced beliefs they face threats that could change the course of their lives. Following the young and ambitious Skeeter, the hilarious and outspoken Minnie alongside the family-oriented Aibileen these women set out to collect the stories of the unheard women in their small town -the help. The fun and secrecy of their side project quickly becomes a far more serious matter the larger the number of people involved and the women struggle to balance their secret lives with their day-to-day. Featuring shenanigans, a sweet treat and a surprise around every corner Stockett delivers a fresh and exciting story of resilience and friendship full of memorable characters which is a must read for everyone who loves a summery page-turner. - Tara
