Like 'The Jewel In The Crown', but told by an Indian, 'The House Of Blue Mangoes' tells many stories in one, each slipping into the other and ultimately intertwined.
First there is the story of the Dorai family - from their humble beginnings in a small village by the sea, to unimaginable splendour, and back to poverty again. This story begins with a rape and the destruction of rural peace and ends with the collapse of the Dorais. There is the story too of another India, of the Raj and the British officers who made their lives in an inhospitable climate. And there is the story of India itself, of its struggle for independence.
A host of characters enliven these pages - from Father Ashcroft, the English priest washed up in a forgotten corner of the empire, to Joshua, the prodigal son who leads the battle on the beach, Daniel and Aaron, brothers at war, Helen, the Anglo-Indian beauty who brings about the final disintegration, Mrs Wilkins the planter's wife who clings to the old ways as the world slowly turns against her.
