Colourful and chaotic, the bazaar has always been at the heart of life in India. From very early times, the weekly "haat" or market provided the space for nomadic vendors to display and sell their wares.
Today, the tradition of the haat continues, even in the big cities and towns where sophisticated shopping malls have begun to take pride of place. Fresh vegetables, spices, pickles, pots and pans, toys and jewellery - every conceivable product can be had at a price in these crowded street-side shops.
Over the last decade, Dinesh Khanna has travelled the length and breadth of the country, losing himself in the experience of the bazaar. In the midst of the crowds, his photographer's eye zeroes in on the unexpected: the quiet refelctive moment, the little girl at play, the solitary chair leaning against a wall - images that surprise us with their ability to transcend the frenzy of their surroundings.
