It is 1974 and Else's father is struggling to make a living on his small fishing boat, losing himself to home-brewed moonshine, while her mother seeks solace in prayer. Stifled by this inward-looking community, fifteen-year-old Else dreams of another life. But that summer, when a circus arrives in a nearby forest, bringing with it tales from afar and promises of exotic escape, her life is changed forever. Thirty years later, Else has built a life for herself, her daughter and grand-daughter, that withstands the village's whispers; but the return of a figure from her past forces her to confront a time and a story she has kept hidden for thirty years.
