Ben Pelten is a pampered lawyer with a pretty wife, two children and a good life. When he is unexpectedly fired he retreats into self-pity, but then an opportunity to work abroad comes along, a chance to make a change and turn his luck around. He leaps at the ideas of being a well-paid Westerner in a poor country, with a house up on the hill, a pool, servants, a country club and a job with more meetings than real work. Local politics are mysterious to Ben, secretive and sometimes violent. He is well-connected, but naive, and finds himself embroiled in events he doesn't fully understand.
