Ben Pelten is a pampered lawyer with a pretty wife, two children and a good life. When he is unexpectedly fired he retreats into self-pity, but then an opportunity to work abroad comes along, a chance to make a change and turn his luck around. He leaps at the ideas of being a well-paid Westerner in a poor country, with a house up on the hill, a pool, servants, a country club and a job with more meetings than real work. Local politics are mysterious to Ben, secretive and sometimes violent. He is well-connected, but naive, and finds himself embroiled in events he doesn't fully understand. Then, when tragedy strikes, he is utterly unprepared and terribly out of his depth, and undermined by both circumstance and his own weakness ...
