Ivan Southall has made a significant contribution to Australian literature for over half a century. 'The Loved And The Lost: The Life Of Ivan Southall' recognises the importance of this contribution. Ivan is most popularly known for Hills End (1962), Ash Road (1965), Let the Balloon Go (1968), Chinaman's Reef Is Ours (1970) and Josh (1971).

He has won important awards in his distinguished literary career, including Australian Children's Book of the Year 1966, 1968, 1971 and 1976; Picture Book of the Year 1969, British Library Association Carnegie Medal for Josh in 1971, the Zilver Griffell of Holland 1972, the Australian Writers Award 1974, the USA Child Study Committee Book of the Year for Rachel in 1988, the International Phoenix Award of the American Library Association (Children's Literature) for The Long Night Watch in 2003 and the Dromkeen Medal for his body of work in 2003.

Southall was a controversial writer with a troubled personal life. This biography depicts Ivan as a man at war both in RAAF service and personally. It describes the Simon Black books of the 1950s as being about dominating fear more than an invincible hero. It explores how Ivan waged war against literary critics and made himself a leading Australian children's author; and the personal relationships he lost in the war of attrition. This biography shows Ivan Southall as not only reflecting the Australian story, but creating it.
