After twenty years of contentedly playing the role of home-maker and mother, Frances Copeland's life is shattered by the sudden and premature death of her husband. Frances is aged forty-three, with two near grown-up children, and the solitude of bereavement hits particularly hard, forcing her to reassess both her own personality and the shape her life has taken.
When the chance of a fresh start presents itself in the form of a man seventeen years her junior, Frances' own reservations about pursuing such a love affair seem to be confirmed by the judgemental attitudes of those nearest to her. Obsessed by this predicament, she fails to observe the crises evolving in the lives of her children - until a tragic accident brings her to her senses.
