Hiding in a tree, 5 year old Jewish boy Alex Kurzem witnessed his family murdered by a German execution squad then escaped into the woods. After a number of harsh months scavenging for food he fell into the hands of a Latvian police battalion. These soldiers adopted him as their mascot taking him everywhere, even as they became an SS extermination squad. As their mascot he became part of the Nazi propaganda machine responsible for killing his own people.
After the war Alex was adopted and his family emigrated to Australia. He kept his secret for fifty years, until one day telling his wife he was flying to Sydney, he travelled instead to London to confess his extraordinary past to his son Mark Kurzem.
