This book is based entirely on first-hand accounts of dramatic memories of action and service at sea. All the principal theatres of war are recalled: from the Battle of River Plate and Dunkirk to D-Day and the Pacific War by way of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
Both the surviving naval VC holders tell their stories and there is much good humour from all ranks who manned the ships of war. Post-1945 memories include Palestine, Korea, Suez and Borneo. Closer to the present there are brilliant accounts by men and women who served in the Falklands campaign and the Gulf War.
This book provides a collection of remarkable accounts from brave and unassuming individuals. They represent a testimony to courage and endeavour; and make an outstanding contribution to set beside the more formal histories.
Includes 16 pages of black and white photographs.
