One morning Ruth wakes thinking a tiger has been in her seaside house. Later that day a formidable woman called Frida arrives, looking as if she's blown in from the sea. In fact she's come to care for Ruth. Frida and the tiger: both are here to stay, and neither is what they seem. Which of them can Ruth trust? And as memories of her childhood in Fiji press upon her with increasing urgency, can she even trust herself?
The Night Guest
A seriously unsettling thriller about a aging widow, Ruth Field, living is an isolated coastal town, who is haunted by a tiger that creeps through her living room at night. Lonely and anxious, Ruth's mental deterioration makes her increasingly vulnerable as she dwells on her past life in Fiji and a long lost love. A tense and at times uncomfortable novel with surprisingly beautiful moments, it is supremely well written- I held onto it for dear life. This is a outstanding debut for this Australian author, made me feel a lot of feelings, the strongest one being to call my mum. Reviewed by 08sv
