I know I'm about 11 years too late reading this book but holy moly I'm glad I did! Sabriel is a strong character with a heck of a lot of passion. She strikes out on her own when she finds out that her father, Abhorsen, has been trapped. Sabriel battles against radical free magic and the Dead in order to find him and save him all the while navigating a land she doesn't know, The Old Kingdom. I delved into the book when I was on my holiday and cursed myself for not buying the rest of the series! This book has everything! Magic, action, monsters, desperation and romance. Dark, thrilling Australian fantasy
I really cant say how much I love this book. I discovered it when I was thirteen, and ten years later its one that I return to again and again. Sabriel is a wonderful heroine courageous, practical, and identifiable. The books co-existing worlds - the broken, Dead-infested Old Kingdom, and early 20th century-era Ancelstierre - are vividly detailed. Nix's rendering of Death is fascinating, and as far as I know, unique. Sabriel is a dark, thrilling fantasy, which also features my favourite snippy talking cat. Do read the whole series. Lirael and Abhorsen are just as good. Reviewed by 33as
