East Anglia and the Fen Country is an ancient land rich with its own traditions and stories. These 26 folk tales have an earthiness, a quirkiness and vitality that makes them a joy to read. They tell of boggarts, marsh sprites and "strangers" who can turn nasty unless placated. Some of them, such as the tale of the Black Dog of Bungay, are powerfully spooky. Some are lyrically beautiful, like the legend of the drowned village that occurs so often in East Anglia. And some are affectionately comic, like the story of the fool who tries to get some brains and find's them in his wife's head. Each one is preceded by a short extract from local lore or literature, and is illustrated with beautiful woodcuts by the distinguished illustrator John Lawrence.
Suitable for ages 8 to 12.
