This is a record and a memento of the finale to the Centenary of Federation celebrations in 2001. The people of Australia were invited to participate in one of the largest community art installations undertaken in this country. To celebrate the true sprit of Australia, individuals and groups were given the opportunity to create a life-size representation of their personal hero, someone whom they felt had significantly affected their lives, their community or their country.

'The Peoplescape' brought together stories from the city, country and outback; from past and present; from the celebrated, the infamous and the unknown, to represent and applaud the diversity and individual contribution of ordinary Australians. Thousands of Australians were celebrated and honoured.

The installation took pride of place in the very heart of the national capita, the Parliamentary Triangle, where the figures 'overran' the slopes of Parliament House and the adjacent Federation Mall.

Written by historian and broadcaster Michael McKernan, this book tells the story of the Peoplescape and those in it. It includes illustrations of the installation and of the individual figures that made it memorable. A comprehensive index lists all those who were successfully nominated for the Peoplescape, together with the name of the nominator.
