The Promise of Happiness is the latest novel from Booker-shortlisted and Whitbread Novel Award-winner Justin Cartwright
Charles Judd meanders round his Cornish village, frequenting Betjeman's grave and occasionally urinating on it. His wife Daphne struggles hopelessly with the latest fish recipe, trying to keep something in her life under control. They are still recovering from the shock of their prodigal daughter, Juliet, being imprisoned in New York State. Since then Charles has suffered more than the loss of a daughter, as the whole family scatters, trying to make sense of what has happened. But now Juliet is being released, the family is about to be reunited and the wounds it has caused each of them are being re-opened.
