Tamaika Erskona works in the Quentaris Library, a labyrinthine building which covers an entire city block. Gifted Tamaika loves books and works hard but is treated like a doormat - bullied and unappreciated by her stepmother, sisters and colleagues.
A dreadful curse has descended on Quentaris and the people are terrified. At night, stone gargoyles come to life and transform the city's defenceless, sleeping citizens into stone-cold statues.
In the terrorised city, Tamaika uncovers an ancient tome untouched for centuries in the library cellar. The book bestows magical powers on Tamaika who is transformed at night into the heroine Mithla, the mythical Princess of Shadows protecting Quentaris from the evil curse. Along with the magic book, Tamaika uncovers her own strength and resilience, falling for and winning the love of noble Prince Cador along the way.
