Nisha is an orphan dishwashing girl from the Old Tree Guest House. She follows a hero as he provisions himself for a trip through the rift caves in search of fame and fortune. When he has chosen a cave and departed, Nisha bumps into Tal, who wants to one day join an expedition and explore some of the other worlds via the rift caves.
That night, a fire is deliberately lit in the elf neighbourhood of Quentaris. The elves were driven from their world by the Zolka, a vicious race of insect-like creatures. Tal has elf friends, and hates the League.
The Bruntians launch an attempt to kill the city leader just as a swarm of Zolka emerge from the caves. The Bruntians' attempt fails, and the Zolka are beaten back, with the help of the fire-fighting hero, and Nisha, who discovers her fire magic heritage.
