Nobody gets in the way of the stalker without regretting it. Not members of the Murderers' Guild, the watchmen, or even the city militia. Even a huge warrior reptile that has arrived in Quentaris cannot defeat the stalker, who wants to destroy a chapter from an ancient book of magic that the student Zelder has been translating.
Zelder's problem is that she has a good memory. She has memorised the chapter and now the stalker is coming after her. All that stands between Zelder and certain death is her fourteen year old brother, Corran, who has been learning to fence with swords for a few months, and thinks he knows it all. Zelder is not feeling very hopeful about the future!
