In this eerie mystery for young adults, Eddy Haite becomes involved in monitoring the behaviour of some radiation-affected rats.

The novel is set on a remote tropical island in the South Pacific. The rats seem to have the ability to observe people, and the man who runs the lab, Rex (Kingy) King seems to be going slowly mad as the rats escape from their cages and steal his painkillers.

In the climax, Eddy returns to the island to find Kingy missing, his cat dead in the well, and rats watching him from hiding places in the bushes. The rats attack him on the beach.
