Sarah Tilber has a passion for history. Captivated by the mysterious Charlie Tilber - a question mark on her family tree - she embarks on a journey across the world, determined to immerse herself in the past and uncover his secrets. Through letters, interviews and painstaking research, Sarah compiles a picture of her great-uncle, and brings to light the tragedy which was to haunt him until his death.
But as she becomes more deeply involved in her project, Sarah begins to lose her ties with the present, slipping her moorings of husband, family and friends, and drifting away on the sea of the past. It is left to Sarah's friend, Jenn, to piece together the fragments of two lives and thereby uncover a haunting which stretches across the Tilber generations.
