Flynn of the Inland

John Flynn - Flynn of the Inland - probably did as much as anyone in developing a sense of Australian national identity in the first half of the twentieth century. A Presbyterian minister, he founded the Australian Inland Mission (AIM), a number of outback hospitals and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, as well as being the founding editor of the 'Inlander' magazine and its chief contributor. To achieve this required more than the ingenuity and determination with which he has frequently been credited.

In 'The Silent Heart' Max Griffiths tells John Flynn's life story and examines that "something more" that made Flynn a national institution.
