Animals' minds are often capable of feats humans cannot begin to emulate. Yet we always see ourselves as intellectually superior. Pavlov's dogs salivated at the ring of a bell associated with food - but so would a human in the same situation. In fact, the distinction between instinct and intellect is not as clear as we would like to think.
The tought processes of even relatively simple creatures can be extraordinarily complex and animals, too, are capable of showing and feeling emotions. If we change the human-centred criteria which we use to quantify intelligence, we are able to reach a better understanding of how animals' minds work.
