On a winter night so cold the fires freeze in the hearth, a mysterious guest appears at the door of Lettie's inn. He claims to be the greatest alchemist that ever lived and that he can change her life forever with his new invention - snow. But in a wild adventure across the five continents and the Occidental Ocean, Lettie discovers the true value of snow, friendship and family. The themes that run through this book are: the idea that things change, love and family. When Lettie's parents are young and courting, Lettie's ma falls in and out of love with him every other day. Lettie's da realises that as an alchemist, Lettie's ma changes things all the time, including her mind! Lettie was created by her ma from slate u as all children should be a blank slate. Ma realises that the stones in the ground are calling her back to being a stone, so she creates snow to shield her. Lettie's alcoholic da turns into a beer bottle, but changes back to a man when he's ready to be a da again. Without snow and her family and friend's protection Lettie would quickly turn back to stone. But with snow she is protected and even the cold and miserable things in life are beautiful.
