The reactionary General Khrapov is murdered on the train from St Petersburg to Moscow. The killer, disguised as Fandorin, leaves a knife bearing the initials 'CG' (Combat Group) in his victim's chest. Fandorin is arrested for the crime, but set free when the general's staff realise their blunder. Who or what is the CG? Prince Dolgorukoi, Moscow's elderly governor-general, asks Fandorin to investigate. His search reveals a worthy foe and causes Fandorin to question everything he believes in...and to fall in love.
