Pennsylvania, 1968. Lynnie, and her sweetheart Homan, have escaped from The School for the Incurable and Feebleminded, an institution where people with disabilities were routinely shut off from society, and left to languish, forgotten. They find refuge in the farmhouse of Martha, a retired schoolteacher, where they reveal that Lynnie has a newborn baby. But moments after they arrive and tuck the baby upstairs, the police are at the door. Homan manages to escape into the darkness, but as Lynnie is being taken back to the school, she whispers two words to Martha: "Hide her." And so begins the odyssey of three people trying to keep their secrets, and yet find their way back to each other, and a woman whose lonely life is forever changed by her promise.
