George Poo is an ordinary science teacher living in England during the late 1800s. At this time George's father and uncle dominated the family's horse-manure-hauling business where George worked part time. George marries and begins creating little Poos, but because of political issues in England and searching for new opportunities George and family decide to immigrate to America. In 1909 George and family arrives in New York. He has no idea what awaits him. All he knows is that America is a place of great opportunity where people are free to express themselves the way they want. His journey leads him to Philadelphia where he secures work and eventually founds a fertilizer company. While George transforms into one of the richest men in America, he founds a town in southern Maryland and creates a unique society in the process.
